Grip, angle and where the force comes from

Two people applying the same amount of force can produce completely different sensations, and the variable is usually the grip. A stone held too upright digs a line; held too flat it skates; held loosely it wanders off the muscle you were aiming at.

None of this is about which stone you own. It is about the angle of the working edge, how much of that edge is in contact, and which joint in your arm is generating the push.

The angle sets the character of the stroke

Roughly thirty to forty-five degrees off the skin, leaning into the direction of travel. That range is a starting point rather than a rule, and the useful thing is knowing what happens either side of it.

Steeper than that concentrates the load into a narrow line. The contact patch shrinks, pressure per square centimetre climbs, and the sensation turns sharp. If the stroke feels like a blade, the first correction is to lay the stone flatter — not to reduce the force, which is what most people try first and which usually just means a sharp stroke that achieves less.

Flatter than that spreads the load until nothing transmits. The stone planes across the surface and you feel friction rather than depth. On a thick area like a thigh you can push very hard at a shallow angle and still be working only the skin.

Adjust the angle before you adjust the force. It is the faster lever and the safer one, and it is the single most useful habit to build in the first few sessions.

How much edge should be touching

More contact for large, thick regions. On a back, a thigh or the slope of a shoulder, present a long section of edge — several centimetres — so the load spreads across a band. Broad contact is comfortable, covers ground and marks evenly.

Less contact for narrow or bony regions. On a forearm or around the shoulder blade there is not a straight run of tissue long enough to take a wide edge, so a shorter contact length follows the contour instead of bridging across it. A stone bridging a contour presses hardest at its two ends, which is the opposite of what you want.

Corners and notches are for contour, not for depth. Where a tool has a curved cut-out or a narrower end, its function is to sit around a tendon or follow a ridge. It is not a way to get deeper into tissue, and using it that way is how people produce a single dark stripe and a sore week.

THE STROKE — grip check

Where the force should come from

Your shoulder and body weight, not your wrist. A wrist-driven stroke has a short travel, poor control at the end of the range, and tires within a minute — and a tired hand applies erratic pressure, which is precisely the thing to avoid when the technique is capable of breaking skin.

Set up so the stroke is a lean rather than a push. Whatever you are working should be positioned where your arm can travel with the joint roughly in the middle of its range. Reaching at full stretch means you can no longer modulate the force, only maintain it.

Keep the wrist reasonably firm and the grip relaxed. A loose wrist lets the angle drift through the stroke, so the first half is shallow and the last half digs. A clenched grip transmits every tremor into the skin. Firm wrist, easy fingers.

On yourself, alternate sides. Working one shoulder to completion with the opposite hand means the second side gets a fatigued arm and a different, usually worse, stroke. Alternating keeps both comparable — one of several reasons self-treatment differs from being worked on.

Holding it on awkward regions

Overhand for anything you are pulling toward yourself, such as a calf or a hamstring worked while seated. The palm sits over the stone, fingers along the top edge, and the pull comes from the shoulder.

Underhand or pinched for anything you are pushing away, such as the front of a thigh. The change in grip is worth practising deliberately, because switching mid-stroke is when stones get dropped.

Two hands for a long back stroke if someone is working on you — one to hold the stone, one to stabilise it and steer. Not necessary, but it makes a long stroke straighter.

What the tradition says

Traditional instruction describes the stone’s angle and the direction of the stroke in some detail, and different lineages differ on the specifics. The angle conventions have a practical logic behind them and they are broadly consistent with what feels controllable.

Whether one angle produces a better outcome than another is not something anyone has established, and this site will not pretend otherwise. What can be said mechanically is that a shallower edge spreads load and a steeper edge concentrates it — which is enough to explain the conventional range without appealing to anything else.

Cautions

A grip that has gone sharp is a skin-breaking risk regardless of how gently you think you are pressing. If the stroke stings at the surface rather than feeling dull and deep, stop and check the angle and the lubrication before continuing.

No angle makes it acceptable to work over bone that sits directly under skin, over broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, moles, lesions or rashes, recent surgery or injury, infected or inflamed areas, or varicose veins. Do not do this at all with a bleeding disorder or on anticoagulant medication. If you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or are unsure, ask a clinician first, and treat unexplained pain as something to get diagnosed rather than scrape.
